Oculoplasty
Oculoplastic surgery is the cosmetic, corrective and reconstructive surgery of the eye. It manages and repairs problems primarily related to the tissues or structures surrounding the eye. These structures include the eyelids, the tear ducts and the orbit (bony socket surrounding the eye).
Diseases Commonly Treated:
1) Ptosis
Ptosis is the medical term for drooping of the upper eyelid. Upper eyelid drooping may affect your vision if the drooping is severe. It can also affect cosmesis. Ptosis correction is carried out by variety of surgical procedures. The best option for you will be decided after consultation with the Oculoplastic Surgeon.
2) Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty refers to the removal of eyelid bags and excess skin around the eyes. Eyelid bags give a tired and aged appearance to the face. Blepharoplasty procedure rejuvenates the face and restores youthfulness.
3) Lacrimal Drainage System Obstruction
Nasolacrimal duct obstruction is a blockage of the lacrimal drainage system which results in watering and discharge from the affected eye. Dacryocystorrhinostomy (DCR), both Endonasal and external are performed here. We also perform probing for congenital Naso Lacrimal Duct Obstruction and Pediatric DCR.
4) Cosmetic Eye Procedures
Botox and Fillers are performed for facial rejuvenation. Advanced indications of BOTOX, including facial contouring and non surgical face lifts are also performed.
5) Lid Abnormalities
Entropion: Entropion is a condition in which an eyelid turns inward, rubbing against the eye, making it red, irritated and sensitive to light and wind. This condition can be corrected optimally by surgery of the eyelids.
Ectropion: An Ectropion is an outwardly turned eyelid. This can lead to eye exposure and dryness and as a result, reflex excessive tearing.
Lid Retraction: Eyelid retraction can affect the upper or the lower eyelid. Eyelid retraction occurs when the eyelid is pulled away from the eyeball either too far up in the case of the upper eyelid or too far down in the case of the lower eyelid. Common causes of eyelid retraction include thyroid eye disease, trauma or previous surgery to the eyelids.
6) Orbital Tumors
A large number of tumors can occur in the orbit. Radiographic imaging is often required for the diagnosis and surgical excision is usually the treatment of choice.
7) Thyroid Eye Disease
Thyroid Ophthalmopathy can cause prominent bulging eyes (Exophthalmos). Eyes may become red, watery and painful. You may experience double vision. After appropriate tests, oral or injectable medications may be started in conjunction with an Endocrinologist.
8) Eye Trauma
Physical or chemical injuries of the eye can be a serious threat to vision if not treated on time.
Some common conditions are:
• Scratched Eye (corneal/ conjunctival abrasion)
• Eyelid tear
• Foreign object in the eye
• Chemical Burn
• Subconjunctival Hemorrhages
• Orbital Fractures
9) Orbital Fractures
An orbital fracture is a traumatic injury to the bone(s) of the eye socket. These injuries are usually the result of blunt force trauma to the eye. Fracture correction is carried out to restore the anatomy and release entrapped orbital contents including muscles.
10) Artificial Eye (Custom Prosthesis)
We perform a large number of socket reconstructive surgeries. We have an onsite custom prosthesis lab with trained Ocularists since 2006.
11) Eye Cancers
Ocular surface and eye lid cancers are managed in the Oculoplasty Department. Early diagnosis and treatment can be life and vision saving. We aspire to improve your quality of life.
12) Orbitotomy
This procedure is carried out for removal of orbital tumors, orbital tissues bioscopy and removal of orbital foreign bodies. We perform Orbitomies through hidden or small incisions for improved cosmesis. We also use endoscope; if required.
13) Orbital Decompression
It is performed for Thyroid Ophthalmopathy with very prominent eyes. Bone and fat decompression are carried out and each procedure is customized depending on the patient’s clinical condition.
